Yoghurt project
In 2003 SYPO helped the small Ugandan aid organization Pat the Child to set up a yogurt factory. In this project, cows were given to women who wanted to adopt an orphan, but were not financially capable of supporting an additional member in their family. The yogurt factory created an independent income for Pat the Child, and thanks to the donated cows, orphans could be adopted in a normal family environment. The well being of these orphans no longer depended on donors, because the women had sufficient income as a result of the money they received for the milk. In addition, Pat the Child could support its own projects without having to rely on sponsors. Following this structural success, the founders of SYPO were convinced that commercial projects are a good way to achieve sustainable development. SYPO still supports the yoghurt project; the production of the plant is growing independently, but we will continue to donate more cows in order to provide orphans with a good future.
The next steps
When the first objectives of the yoghurt project were achieved, SYPO in the Netherlands decided to expand. We plan to initiate and support more projects, in order to reach more people with the same method. SYPO continues to invest in the growth of our partner organization in Uganda. We hope to set up many new projects in the coming years which will all have a sustainable effect, by investing in the strength and initiative of the Ugandan people.
